El Comité de Terminología y Clasificación de la Asociación Americana sobre Discapacidad Intelectual y Discapacidades del Desarrollo (AAIDD, "American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities") tiene dos objetivos principales al publicar este artículo: (a) compartir nuestras ideas sobre el constructo que subyace al término discapacidad intelectual (de ahora en adelante el constructo de discapacidad intelectual) y su relación con el funcionamiento humano, y (b) solicitar aportaciones desde el campo puesto que el comité está preparando una propuesta para el próximo manual de Definición, Clasificación y Sistemas de Apoyos, que será publicado en 2009 ó 2010. El artículo consta de tres secciones.
En la primera sección, se distingue entre definición operacional, que operativiza el constructo de discapacidad intelectual y proporciona la base para el diagnóstico y la clasificación, y definición constitutiva, que explica el constructo subyacente y proporciona la base para el desarrollo de teorías-modelos y la planificación de apoyos individualizados. En la segunda sección, se proporciona una visión histórica sobre cómo el constructo que subyace al término retraso mental (de ahora en adelante, el constructo de retraso mental) difiere del constructo subyacente al del término discapacidad intelectual. En la tercera sección, describimos los parámetros del marco teórico del funcionamiento humano propuesto por la AAIDD, que refleja nuestra comprensión actual de la multidimensionalidad del funcionamiento humano que subyace al constructo de discapacidad intelectual y del significativo papel que juegan los apoyos individualizados en el funcionamiento humano. El artículo finaliza con una breve discusión sobre los beneficios para el área que se derivan de un claro entendimiento de las diferencias entre una definición operacional y constitutiva, y de las propiedades fundamentales del constructo de discapacidad intelectual.

"The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities" (AAIDD) Terminology and Classification Committee has two primary purposes in publishing this Perspective: (a) to share our thinking about the construct underlying the term intellectual disability (henceforth the intellectual disability construct) and its relation to human functioning and (b) to ask for input from the field because the committee is preparing a proposal for the upcoming Definition, Classification and Systems of Supports manual, to be published in 2009 or 2010. The article has three sections. In the first section, we make a distinction between an operational definition, which operationalizes the intellectual disability construct and provides the basis for diagnosis and classification, and a constitutive definition, which explains the underlying construct and provides the basis for theory¿ model development and planning individualized supports. In the second section, we provide an historical overview of how the construct underlying the term mental retardation (henceforth, the mental retardation construct) differs from the construct underlying intellectual disability. In the third section, we describe the parameters to the proposed AAIDD theoretical framework of human functioning that reflects our current understanding of the multidimensionality of human functioning that underlies the intellectual disability construct and the significant role that individualized supports play in human functioning. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the benefits to the field that accrue from a clear understanding of both the differences between an operational and constitutive definition and the fundamental properties of the intelectual disability construct.
